Landing your next CoS role: the interview playbook that actually works

Most Chief of Staff job descriptions read like a task list. Run the exec meeting. Keep projects on track. Manage the all hands.

Candidates interview to that list. The operators who walk out with strong offers don't.

We wrote up the interview playbook we've seen actually work. Here’s the short version:

  • Talk about the cadence you owned and what it produced, not the tasks.

  • Name the real problem before they do.

  • Ask questions that surface the real scope. Is the seat real or decorative?

  • Let the tactical work be assumed. Spend the interview on judgment.
