033 OpsJobs | Is the Chief of Staff role actually right for you?

A new course to help you figure it out, plus a new podcast on how to position yourself.

Hi there,

The Chief of Staff role is having a moment.

Job postings are up. The title carries more weight than it did a few years ago. And we hear from more people every week who want to make the jump.

But here's the honest truth: the role isn't the right fit for everyone.

As Chief of Staff Network President, Tom Guthrie, said on the podcast this week: sit in silence for an hour, or go for a walk, and think really hard about what work you actually want to be doing. Too few people have done that introspection before they find themselves in the middle of a job hunt, desperate to land something without knowing where they're headed. The Chief of Staff role can be a career accelerant, but only if you know what you're accelerating toward.

The ones who struggle often wanted the title more than the work. Or they walked into a role without understanding what it actually demands on a daily basis. The job descriptions rarely tell the full story, and a lot of people don't realize what they've signed up for until they're already in the seat.

That's why we rebuilt our Fundamentals course from the ground up.

Chief of Staff Fundamentals is a low-cost, self-paced course across 15 lessons that walks you through what the role actually looks like and how to make yourself successful in it. Every lesson includes real stories from Chiefs of Staff in our community who've been through it.

On the CoS pod this week: Positioning Yourself as a Chief of Staff

We also just dropped a new episode where I sat down with Tom, Rahul, and Lauren to break down what actually gets people hired into CoS roles.

We covered the five traits principals screen for, why the resume pile is almost never the best path in, and what questions you should be asking in the interview to make sure the role is right for you, not just the other way around.

Worth a listen if you're exploring the role or helping someone else figure out if it's a fit.

This week’s lineup is stacked with serious operator seats. From Chief of Staff roles at fast-growing health and tech companies to executive-level Business Operations at OpenAI, Corporate Development at MrBeast, and growth leadership across Coinbase and Anduril, the signal is clear: companies are hiring operators who can drive scale, strategy, and execution.
